The finale of the Game Of Thrones season 7 gave us a mighty view of the ice dragon melting down the wall and the night king sitting proudly on it. We know season 8 will give us a great battle between the humans and the white walkers. Kit Harrington in an interview had revealed that the final season will be a bloodbath. For sure we would lose some of our favourite characters. Fans have already started speculating the storyline of the final season but what has been a suspense for many seasons is the man behind Azor Ahai.
“There will come a day after a long summer when the stars bleed and the cold breath of darkness falls heavy on the world. In this dread hour a warrior shall draw from the fire a burning sword. And that sword shall be Lightbringer, the Red Sword of Heroes, and he who clasps it shall be Azor Ahai come again, and the darkness shall flee before him.”
“When the red star bleeds and the darkness gathers, Azor Ahai shall be born again amidst smoke and salt to wake dragons out of stone.”
Azor Ahai is the hero prophesized to fight the undead when the long night comes. He carries with him the sword Lightbringer that yields fire. The prophecy of Essos-based faith R’hllor, this legendary man defeated the white walkers 8,000 years back with his menacing sword. Lighbringer, initially took him 30 days to make but shattered when he tempered it with water. Next time, after 50 days of perfecting the blade, it broke when he tried to capture and kill a lion. He knew what had to be done so he finally, after 100 days plunged it deep into the heart of Nissa Nissa, his beloved wife thus uniting the heart and blade to create an unbreakable combination. The second of Azor Ahai has to fulfil all these conditions.
From the series, we have slowly come to believe that Jon Snow is actually “The Prince Who Was Promised”. Now is this prince the Azor Ahai or they are totally different people? Fans have been speculating over this for quite some time now and here are our top picks for the mighty Azor Ahai.
1. Jorah Mormont
Yes we have seen him to be the man who is always friendzoned by his favourite Khaleesi but fans strongly believe that he’ll be the man to kill them all. Look at the facts closely. He captured a lion (Tyrion Lannister whose house sigil is leonine), he was reborn amidst “salt and smoke” (when he travelled from Slaver’s Bay to Westeros through the Smoking Sea and very near to that sea rests Brightroar, a long Valyrian sword) and we think finally George R.R. Martin will allow him to stab Dany, his true love with that sword thus forging the Lightbringer. Finally he’ll become the 1,000th lord commander of the Night’s Watch.
2. Samwell Tarly
This man has got some of the things just too right to fill this prophecy. He has all the right knowledge about the white walkers and perhaps one of the most learned man amongst all the main characters. He has already killed a white walker before. He now possesses the Heartsbane, sword of house Tarly and one of the rarest of them all. Fans are speculating that he’d put Heartsbane through Gilly, his one true love, and will finally become Azor Ahai. After all, we believe that Gilly is still alive for some reason. As also is her son. They would have some role to play and what better than making our adorable Sam the hero we have been waiting for.
3. Theon Greyjoy
Yes we know you are shocked to see his name on the list. After all how can a man (okay let’s not argue that) who often shows his shades of fear be a worthy contender! But think about it. Theon has survived enough rocky roads in his journey and somehow he is still alive. We all know from the last season that he seeks redemption. Will his journey only be confined to saving Yara? Remember, one is not born a hero. A person becomes a hero. Theon has gone under quite a transformation. And we know that GRRM loves surprises. So it wouldn’t be quite hard to digest that fact that Theon would sacrifice himself ultimately and save the rest, especially Winterfell as a tribute to Ned Stark who was more fatherly to him than his own father ever was.
4. The Hound
Game of Thrones is all about making us like the characters we initially hated. This guy is surely one of them. Remember how he said he was afraid of fire. Now notice that the up rise of Azor Ahai and killing the white walkers have a lot to do with fire. The Hound finally getting a grip of his fear and finishing those zombies off would definitely be a sight to behold. Also, this is one such character that should have died long back. In fact, he was believed to be dead for quite some time. But he is alive and his sole purpose simply cannot be to fight and defeat the mountain. We believe he has a greater role to play. So look out for junior Clegane, he might just be the man!
Let’s welcome Robert Baratheon’s bastard in the list. He was under our nose throughout the entire time. Yes at some point we all have guessed about his purpose in the show. Well this might be it. This is simply because of his sudden return that has spiked up controversies. Gendry has been travelling for quite some time in water, has been making weapons for Lannisters whose sigil is a lion. He is a blacksmith and can forge swords made of dragon glass and what if one day he makes his own Lightbringer. But who is his Nissa Nissa? Well, by this time we all know this guy is full of surprises.
6. Beric Dondarion
He is in the list for obvious reasons. He already owns a Lightbringer. But is that all to make him the Azor Ahai reborn? Thoros of Myr, a prominent priest of the light has put all his chips on this guy. So there must be something to him. Beric has already been brought to life many a times by the lord of light. He has also proven his fighting skills. But there are still some questions that need to be answered. All we can say, that the final season will be an overload of surprises.
7. Jamie Lannister
The bad guy who has now turned one of the most favourites! Yes it’s the Lannister hottie, Jaime. And what makes him a worthy contender? The very facts that he is undoubtedly a skilled fighter, possesses a great sword and is one of the fan favourites. One thing we can be sure of is Cersei being killed by her little brother and it’s none other than Jaime. What if he puts his sword through her heart thus binding it with the power of love and finishing off those white walkers? What a treat it would be to see this man finishing off the evil. Even thinking about it makes us happy enough.
So here goes our list of the deserving yet unusual characters ultimately becoming the Azor Ahai. Who among this do you think has the potential to be the same? Write down in the comment below so that we can exchange our facts and wait for years to get it answered.
